Under the title “12 Breathtaking Places You’ve Probably Never Heard Of” the Huffington Post, one of the world’s most popular news websites, released an article featuring 12 stunning places of mind-blowing beauty scattered around the world, with Melissani Lake in Kefalonia ranking 6th.
According to the Huffington post, this cave lake looks like it’s out of a legend, standing proud among awe-inspiring beaches, amazing volcanic landscapes, underwater caves, exciting waterfalls, idyllic landslips and others less known gems of supernatural beauty around the globe.
Melissani Lake is a natural piece of art in Kefalonia’s subterranean world, considered to be the cave of the nymphs. A landscape of excellence, beautiful waters with changing shades of blue as the sun sets, honey-like brown walls and countless stalactites take your breath away and travel you to another, mythical and magical world.
In the 1962 excavations, quite a few oil lamps, plates and figures were discovered depicturing the god Pan and several nymphs. Legend has it that the Cave of Melissani was the very spot where one of those Nymphs, Melissanthi (or Melissani), drowned after being rejected by the god Pan.
