Azure coloured calm waters, tail winds, safe small harbours close to each other and organised marinas add up to form ideal conditions for safe sailing expeditions worth to remember. The well-known Etesian winds of the Aegean Sea, a.k.a Meltemia, never blow here and the summer wind, which rarely exceeds 5 Beaufort,  usually blows from the West to the NorthWest starting late in the afternoon, which makes it easy to plan a trip.

The eastern coasts of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia in particular, have well-protected natural coves and organised harbours that welcome pleasant sailing. Craft mooring infrastructure can be found in Argostoli, Lixouri, Poros, Sami, Aghia Efimia and the cosmopolitan Fiscardo.

On the west coast of the island, the wild beauty of the landscape which fades out in the crystal blue waters will impress even the most experienced navigators. At this point you must make a stop in Assos to marvel at the majestic scenery of the peninsula and visit the Venetian fortress and the quaint settlement.

The Editor’s Advice: Caused by the high mountains,  the winds are usually stronger in the areas of Argostoli gulf and the southern coasts of the island,  so sailing here requires extra attention.
